About Me...April Henley, Professional Writer

"There is nothing to writing. All you do is sit down at a typewriter and bleed."

-Ernest Hemingway

I admire this quotation. Anyone can write but not everyone can write well. I knew very little about the industry when I decided at eighteen that I was going to be a writer. All I knew was that writing gave me a feeling of satisfaction and accomplishment unmatched in any other line of work.

My ambition to pursue a career as a writer encouraged my choice to attend Baylor University. Baylor was the only college to offer a major in Professional Writing; which, by definition, offers a student the chance to learn a variety of writing skills in more than one line of business. Upon graduating, Baylor had equipped me with experience in business, technical, and promotional writing, as well as, creative pieces.

Halliburton (2013-2016)

In August 2013, I began work as a technical writer for Pinnacle: A Halliburton Service and spent the next 2 years and 6 months reviewing and writing reports based on the microseismic (MSM) and/or microdeformation (MDM) data collected by the company's toolstrings. Additionally, I generated MSM and MDM report graphics using Pinnacle-based software and recorded notes during conclusion and recommendation meetings for project manager use in the later construction of reports.

*Per the request of my former manager at Pinnacle, none of my written work from my time with this employer is available on this online portfolio, due to client confidentiality and Halliburton-exclusive writing styles. To see examples of my written work with this company, with the details fabricated to protect client relations, I will gladly present said work in my hard copy portfolio at an interview. Thank you.

Lennar (2016-2020)

In July 2016, I joined Lennar, America's largest homebuilder, a Fortune 500 Company, as the Creative Writer of the Branding & Creative Team on Lennar's Corporate MarCom Team in Houston. For 4 years, I was trusted with a variety of writing assignments to promote Lennar, its Products & Services, and its affiliated members in mortgage, title, and home insurance. By writing copy for print and web, including a variety of materials that circulate in Lennar Welcome Home Centers and commonplace methods of advertisement, as well as 40+ articles for the Lennar Open Door blog and Resource Center, my skills in copy, research, and marketing expanded, and I was afforded opportunities to self-manage multiple projects and work with teams directly and indirectly on various projects.

GoForClose (2020-2022)

In November 2020, I freelanced with GoForClose, the only all-inclusive marketing agency for real estate investors. I wrote weekly blog content for their subsidiary site, SolidOffers, to educate home sellers on their motivations to sell to real estate investors.

In March 2021, GoForClose hired me on full time as their Content Developer. In 12 months, I developed a number of wide and varied content pieces, including over 100 blog articles, social media posts and video content, web pages, playbooks, outbound marketing campaign scripts (for cold calls, SMS, RVM, and emails), HARO pitches, the company's 2024 Vivid Vision, and a presentation and PDF for GoForClose's 2022 Real Estate Investing Forecast. All of this served to improve their search engine optimization (SEO) and increase quality organic leads to the company's websites, but also build the brand's reputation in the REI industry.

Jump Company (2022-2023)

In April 2022, I accepted a Copywriter position at Jump Company, a marketing agency that specializes in branding, creative content development, performance marketing, media planning and buying, and experience design. While their clients come from a broad spectrum of industries, I assisted with the creation of advertising campaigns within the industry of health insurance. As a valued member of Jump's Creative Team, I adapted an established brand and messaging strategy across a wide range of advertising materials, while adhering to all legal mandatories and client preferences. In addition to client work, I lent my services to improving the Jump Company website and its social media.

Off Duty Management (2023-2024)

In October 2023, I took a Marketing Copywriter position with Off Duty Management (ODM), located in Katy, TX. ODM supports and protects law enforcement and first responders by offering a solution that manages all aspects of their off-duty jobs and programs. As their Copywriter, my role was two-part: my priority responsibility was searching out and responding to Request For Proposals (RFP), on behalf of ODM, to win them contracts with law enforcement agencies and municipalities across the country. This required researching each agency and municipality's needs, identifying and contacting leads for additional information, and writing RFP responses that could number anywhere from 50 to over 100 pages, complete with graphics and charts. My second responsibility was to create written content for the ODM website and other marketing materials, as well as for the owner's second company (in real estate), Faircroft.

Career Hiatus (2024-Present)

In June 2024, I left Off Duty Management (ODM) to be a full-time author. I published the first novel coloring book in December 2023, an original concept I have been told by book professionals at signing events. I wanted to take time away from my career to focus on writing my next novel, and in the six months since leaving ODM, I wrote three children's books, two of which are set to publish in 2025, and am still writing my novel. In this time, I have also achieved the following:

  • Won 5 book awards.

  • Sold over 500 copies of my book across 19 book signings, including Barnes & Noble.

  • Spoke at Rare Books LA Union Station and was a visiting author at Collins Intermediate in The Woodlands, TX.
